How this is measured.
Definition
Number of women who die from pregnancy-related causes per 100,000 live births. The most-cited indicator of maternal health.
Calculation
Modeled estimate combining civil registration, household surveys, and population-based studies. Joint estimate from WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, World Bank, and UN Population Division.
Civil registration is incomplete in many African countries; estimates rely on modeling. Confidence intervals widen for countries with limited primary data. Estimates may be revised as new survey data becomes available.
Cross the bridge
Behind the numbers, the country.
Numbers tell you the trajectory. Tourism shows you the people, the parks, the streets — the lives the data is measuring.
